مع نهاية كأس عالم قطر 2022، أصبح ليونيل ميسي صاحب الرقم القياسي الجديد كلاعب كرة القدم الأكثر مشاركة في نهائيات كأس العالم ولعب اللاعب الأرجنتيني للمرة الـ 26 في المونديال، ما يعني أنه تجاوز لوثار ماتيوس وميروسلاف كلوزه.

صاحب الـ 35 عامًا وصل قطر وهو خارج قائمة العشرة الأوائل، حيث لم يكن قد لعب سوى 19 مباراة، لكنه تخطى عدد المشاركات القياسية بمنتخب بلاده والذي كان يحمله دييجو مارادونا برصيد 21 مباراة، وقد كسر رقم ماتيوس بوصوله إلى 26 مباراة بعد مشاركته في المباراة النهائية أمام منتخب فرنسا. وأنهى ميسي البطولة بسبعة أهداف وثلاث تمريرات حاسمة، ليصبح أول لاعب يسجل في كل مباريات الأدوار الإقصائية ودور المجموعات.

واحتل البرتغالي كريستيانو رونالدو المركز الخامس بـ22 مشاركة في كأس العالم. في غضون ذلك، سجل الفرنسي هوغو لوريس رقماً قياسياً في كأس العالم لحراس المرمى. إذ لعب حارس مرمى توتنهام هوتسبير البالغ من العمر 35 عامًا مباراته العشرين في كأس العالم في النهائي.
